Gender equality has been a long-standing debate in countless sectors, and recently, a female worker from Sydney, Australia, brought this issue into the spotlight—this time, from a construction site under the blistering summer sun.
Same Heat, Different Rules
On a scorching 40°C (104°F) day, Shianne Fox, a tradeswoman known online as The Bikini Tradie, took to TikTok to question why men are allowed to work shirtless while women are expected to remain fully clothed.
“It’s a 40-degree day, and here I am forced to wear a shirt, while the guys are shirtless,” she said. “It’s unfair. It’s sexist. I just want equal treatment.”
Her frustration stemmed from the claim that going topless would “distract the men,” a reasoning she slammed as outdated and discriminatory. Fox, who often wears a bikini top to beat the heat, said her request isn’t about attention—it’s about comfort and equality.
A Fight for Fairness or a Step Too Far?
Having worked in male-dominated trades for over four years, Fox says she’s comfortable in her own skin and believes being topless shouldn’t be considered shocking or distracting.
“We all have breasts. It’s natural. If someone’s uncomfortable, maybe they need to grow up,” she said in an interview with news.com.au.
Though she also creates content for an adult site, Fox hopes her boldness encourages more women to consider careers in trades, breaking down both social and professional barriers.
“I wanted to show other women that we belong here too,” she explained.
Mixed Reactions from Fellow Women
However, not all female tradespeople are on board. Some believe Fox’s public image—often working in bikini tops—may damage the reputation of hardworking women in trades.
“She doesn’t represent us,” one female tradie commented. “She makes real female tradies look bad,” said another.
Public Response: Support, Sarcasm, and Sexism
Online reactions have ranged from supportive to sexist to downright dismissive.
“Absolutely agree—show off the assets,” one man commented, while another quipped, “Isn’t there air conditioning in the kitchen?”
Despite the mixed feedback, the conversation sparked by Fox’s video highlights an important issue: double standards in the workplace, especially when it comes to gender.
Beyond the Bikini: The Bigger Picture
According to a 2023 Deloitte report, men still outnumber women 12 to 1 in trades. With such a glaring gender imbalance, many argue that focusing on equal topless rights might distract from the more urgent issue—helping more women break into male-dominated industries in the first place.
Fox, however, remains undeterred.
“I love what I do, and I don’t let men intimidate me,” she said. “Confidence is key. If you stand your ground, they won’t bother you.”
